One of my career defining moments has to be a recent Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA) nomination for #KeBonaSpoko that I co-directed. Accolades are not what define us but the moments in between. Heading all the way to #Nigeria and engaging with other filmmakers has broadened my perspective of authentic storytelling. I am excited to see everyday unfold into the future.
What inspires me is the increasing visibility of women in the various roles within the film industry, both on and off-screen, as well as creating impactful work and pursuing my passions. As a woman in the film and television industry I gravitate towards our world-renowned and celebrated directors – Tyler Perry and Ava DuVernay. They are constantly breaking barriers, challenging stereotypes and advocating for change. Maneuvering the intricacies and injustices within the filmmaking and the creative industry is resourceful in my own journey.
Winning a SAFTA Golden Horn Award in 2018 for the film I produced, O Kae Molao, under the category ‘Best Made Television Movie’ is a memorable highlight. It was my first film production, and the triumph in overcoming the production deficit was a time of hard lessons and finding strength to overcome them.
My journey with SWIFT has been remarkable and it still continues to be because there is sisterhood, warmth and support. The opportunities I’ve embarked on through what was shared within the platform is always a beautiful reminder that I am worthy. Being in the #swiftcommunity demystifies so many stereotypes held against what women are to one another and is in fact the birthplace of steadiness and anchorship.
