: I love captivating people with thought-provoking stories. As a writer, I am constantly alert and an observer of the world around me to keep my creativity alive. When I observe a couple fighting, children playing, and someone praying are moments I take in. These are all moments I exist in and awaken me to expand on dialogue or behaviour for ideas to write a screenplay.
Article: Female Filmmaker Friday features Minenhle Luthuli, a film director and screenwriter.

Recently, Minenhle was revealed as a winner of the 2023 Durban FilmMart SA Jumpstart Program, where her latest screenplay concept will be developed for her feature film production. Her short film, Heart Attack, has been listed as a nominee for best screenplay at the 2023 Simon Sabela Awards (KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission) . The director has written for Durban Gen, The Estate, released her short film, Heart Attack on Showmax, and ventured into script coordinating. We had a chat with her to get personal.

I love captivating people with thought-provoking stories. As a writer, I am constantly alert and an observer of the world around me to keep my creativity alive. When I observe a couple fighting, children playing, and someone praying are moments I take in. These are all moments I exist in, and awaken me to expand on dialogue or behaviour for ideas to write a screenplay.

Seeing people engaged with my work, and I engage with it inspires me so that my team works at the pulse of excellence when executing projects. Leading this also encourages their involvement in the creative process between preproduction, production, and post-production. My notable accomplishments are: (1) having the opportunity to pitch at DFM for my feature film, ‘Some Mother.’ (2) Winning the NEFTI Short Film competition for my short film, ‘Get Ready with Me.’ One night is all it took to start and complete production. I interchanged my role as a creative director, wardrobe assistant, make-up artist, and supporting actor.

There have been doors and networks that have opened for me through the ladies I met at SWIFT. I love the community and support that comes with being a member.
Interesting fact: Soon I will be shooting my next short film, Being You,’ while developing my first feature, ‘Some Mothers.’

P.S. I have kept in mind that inspiration to come in waves. When I have the energy to do the work, I do it. When I don’t feel like doing it, unless it paid work, I don’t.
