Female Filmmaker Friday features Roberta Durrant, a lifetime achievement award winner and seasoned Creative Producer

As we celebrate our cultural diversity in South Africa, this week we feature a woman leading a diverse team at Penguin Films. A woman who embodies the essence of inclusion and cultural storytelling. One such individual is Roberta Durrant, a creative director, producer, and show-runner with a wealth of experience in theatre, film, and television.

Roberta's passion for storytelling was sparked by a simple realisation: "As a creative, I knew that if I wanted to tell the stories that mattered to me, I would need to carve out my own path." This epiphany led her to launch Penguin Films, with the primary goal of sharing narratives that resonate across cultures and experiences. With a deep commitment to narrative and creativity, Pinguin Films establishment is a film studio for a multitude of voices, further enriching the landscape of South African cinema.

One of Roberta’s core beliefs is that diversity breeds creativity. In her experience, "diverse teams always bring the magic." She emphasises the significance of including individuals who are connected to the stories being told. "Having someone on your writing team who understands the cultural nuances of the narrative can elevate the storytelling process." Roberta sees collaborative creativity as essential, allowing everyone involved to learn from each other and engage more deeply with the material. "We are stronger in our diversity," she asserts, highlighting the richness that comes from varied perspectives.

As South Africa celebrates its rich tapestry of cultural diversity, Roberta acknowledges the growing presence of women in film and how it transforms crews on set. "When I started, there weren't many filmmakers," she recalls. Now, however, she sees a significant shift in the industry, with initiatives like SWIFT empowering women in film. On her recent project, the telenovela Skermergrond, she consciously chose to have two female directors, believing in the unique feminine aesthetic they bring. This diversity is not just about representation; it plays a vital role in the film's success.

Through her work, Roberta Durrant has not only reflected the diversity of South African experiences but has also helped shape the industry into a more inclusive and vibrant space. Her legacy will continue to inspire and empower future generations of storytellers.
