#FemaleFilmmakerFriday features Pearl Munonde the Founder & Executive Producer at ŃwaChasiya Media, also Board member of SWIFT & Durban FilmMart
Pearl Munonde’s dynamic background filmmaking and passionate advocacy for social change spans over two decades of experience in drama, documentaries, and reality television. As we celebrate our cultural diversity in South Africa, we recognise Pearl as a woman who embodies the essence of inclusion and culturally empowering storytelling. Through her production company, ŃwaChasiya Media, Munonde strives to amplify voices from communities often relegated to the margins, creating films that resonate deeply and inspire social change. "Film has the power not just to entertain but to elevate and educate," she asserts.
Pearl's filmmaking journey began with a passion for authentic storytelling. "I've always felt a strong connection to the untold narratives of our communities," she reflects. Collaboration is key to Pearl's creative process. "I encourage open dialogue and the sharing of different perspectives," she explains. As South Africa celebrates its cultural richness, Pearl notes the growing influence of women in film as a pivotal factor in diversifying film sets. "Women bring a unique perspective, often focusing on community, strength, and identity," she notes. This shift leads to more inclusive and authentic storytelling. "When diverse voices come together, the narratives gain depth and sensitivity, providing a more authentic representation of our society," she adds
To ensure accurate representation, her production process involves thorough research and direct consultation with community members and leaders. "Authenticity in representation is vital," she emphasises, believing that collaboration with those who live these stories leads to deeper connections with both local and global audiences. The SAFTA 14-nominated docu-reality series, Yobe, personifies the success of diverse collaboration.
Pearl thrives on "structured chaos" in her creative process, finding inspiration in unpredictable production moments. Among her many inspiring team members, Production Manager Kyle Rhodes and Production Assistant Mpumi Ndayi stand out for their exceptional organisational skills and infectious enthusiasm. "Kyle's attention to detail and Mpumi's relentless spirit remind me of the importance of every role in a production," she conveys. Additionally, Jessica Setati's calm demeanour during challenging productions has left a lasting impression on Pearl, emphasising how a dynamic team leads to the success of a television production.
Interesting fact: Recently, Pearl worked at the Royatly Soapie Awards as a x with a strong team of experienced professionals while also giving entry level opportunities to the younger generation.
